"The place to stay on Fire island…The Palms Hotel"
"beautiful suites"
"great beach"
The greatest escapes and weekend getaways in and around New York City...
"Ditch your car and hop aboard a thirty-minute ferry from Bayshore to Fire Island where weekenders pack up coolers with food from home and fill red wagons for their time on the beach. The island is made up of many sections, from Ocean Beach, attracting NYC singles to areas like Fair Harbor and Dune Wood which attract a more family friendly crowd"
"The draw of Fire Island is the immaculate beaches...walkers will enjoy an outing to the Sunken Forest, a maritime forest on the island where the tree branches are twisted due to wind and salt spray"
"Looking for a hotel on Ocean Beach? Try the Palms Hotel 168 Cottage Walk, (631) 583-8870
www.thepalmsatoceanbeach.com. This boutique hotel is located in the center or Ocean Beach, it is quite popular and books up fast!"
Why go: The unofficial "capital" of Fire Island the village of Ocean Beach is a 600-plus home community with the most bars, restaurants and shops. (Not to mention the most visitors, which has led to some unorthodox rules - like the recently overturned law that prohibited eating ice cream on Main Street.) As Ocean Beach officials find a healthy balance, visitors continue to flock. Perhaps because Ocean Beach's Main Street is lined with several really good restaurants and bars, a smattering of food markets (including a fish market), upscale boutiques, arts and crafts shops, a spa, a hardware store and more. This is as resort-y as it gets on Fire Island.
Stay: Ocean Beach offers more hotels than any other community. The Palms Hotel (631-583-8870, palmshotelfireisland. com) is a relaxed boutique hotel with all the amenities techies can't live without - flat-screen satellite TVs with DVD players, Wi-Fi hot spots, refrigerators and iPod docking stations - not to mention Egyptian cotton sheets, outdoor hot showers, L'Occitane bath amenities, kayak rentals and complimenta ry bicycles, grocery wagons and Starbucks coffee. In other words, if you're coming to the island empty-handed, this is the place for you. Rooms from $265 (weekends).
The Palm Hotel's commitment to the environment and our earth is clear. Since our inaugural year in 2005, we have implemented many changes to become more environmentally friendly. This year, in an effort to become more energy efficient we have upgraded our heating/ hot water and air conditioning equipment. Despite an increase in occupancy, we have reduced our water usage by installing low flow shower heads and instituting towel conservation. Energy efficient light bulbs have been installed throughout the hotel. Paper products used throughout the hotel are recycled. Our cleaning products are primarily "green" and we continue to explore eco-friendly products. This year we even installed new energy efficient washers and dryers. The Palms Hotel works in a cooperative effort with the Village of Ocean Beach to separate and recycle garbage.
For the 2009 Summer Season, we are proud to partner with another socially responsible company, world renowned, L'OCCITANE. This skincare line is committed to limiting the impact of product development on the environment. Shampoos, soaps, and lotions provided for our guests are rich in natural ingredients offering the very best certified-organic products which are never tested on animals.
This really is the thorniest of topics, and we're sure to make no new friends by saying there isn't really a hotel on Fire Island that's worth the money.
That said, there are two we feel are clean and friendly enough so as to be worth overpaying. And to be completely fair, there's barely anything worth the money that you pay to spend the night in the Hamptons this time of year. Our picks for this season are:
The Palms at Ocean Beach recently renovated and cute as a button, there are tiny, but bright and cheerful rooms, he recently renovated hotel has tiny but bright and cheerful rooms, most with shared bathrooms in the hallway. Morning coffee is served out on the back patio. 168 Cottage Walk, Ocean Beach
